민주평통 달라스협의회(회장 오원성)와 북텍사스이북도민회(회장 박인애)가 공동주최한 ‘북한동포에게 편지쓰기 대회’ 시상식이 지난 11일(토) 열렸다.

북한동포에게 편지쓰기 대회에서 대상을 차지한 엄명희 목사는 북에서 학생을 가르치던 교사로서 제자들에게 “통일을 이루어 빨리 만나자”는 진솔한 마음을 전해 오원성 수필가, 김미희 시인, 박인애 시인, 이경철 수필가 등 북텍사스의 한인 문인들로 구성된 심사위원 전원으로부터 높은 점수를 받았다.

엄명희 목사는 “자유를 찾아 탈북하는 과정이 너무나 힘들어 죽고 싶을 때가 많았다”고 회상하면서 “미국에서 잘 살고 있는 현실이 오히려 북에 두고 온 제자들에게는 죄책감이 들 정도로 미안하다”며 눈시울을 붉혔다.

최우수상에는 실향민인 임태성 씨가 선정됐다. 임태성 씨는 “부모님의 고향을 생각하고 편지를 쓰며 수차례 수정하고 정성을 다하는 동안 눈물을 한없이 흘렸다”면서 “이런 기회를 마련해 준 민주평통달라스협의회와 북텍사스이북도민회에 깊은 감사를 드린다”고 말했다.

이 밖에도 우수상으로는 탈북민인 행 김 씨가 선정됐고 실향민인 초청송와 김춘자, 최정임 씨가 장려상을 수상했다. 가작으로는 유혜정, 장미영 씨와 북한이 고향인 장현숙, 심정애, 임진희 씨 등이 선정됐다.

박인애 심사위원장은 심사평에서 모든 편지에 담긴 진솔함과 간절함은 어떤 문학작품과도 비교할 수 없을 만큼 귀하고 감동이었다”고 극찬했다. 박 위원장은 이어 “이번 편지쓰기 행사를 통해 혈육을 그리워하고 평화통일을 소망하는 마음이 북한 동포의 자유와 평화를 지키고 인권을 보호하는 계기가 되길 바란다. 심사는 공정성을 기해 참가자 이름을 모두 가린 상태에서 진행했으며 타주에서 참가하여 높은 점수를 받았음에도 시상식에 참여를 못해 수상자에서 제외되기도 했다”며 안타까워했다.

달라스협의회 오원성 회장은 “북한 주민들의 인권이 갈수록 악화되고 있기에 탈북민이나 실향민들의 마음을 위로하고 북한동포들의 인권이 개선되어 자유가 확대되는 변화를 견인해 나가고자하는 취지에서 편지쓰기대회를 개최했다“고 밝히면서 “진심을 담은 편지를 읽는 동안 감동을 받아 눈물을 많이 흘렸다”고 말했다.

김영호 운영위원은 “여러분의 편지가 북한에 전달되어 북한동포들의 자유와 평화를 지키고 인권이 개선되길 바란다”면서 “민주평통댈러스협의회가 사명감을 갖고 추진하는 통일운동에 여러분들의 관심과 지지는 한반도 평화를 지키는 씨앗이 될 것”이라는 기대감을 보였다.

한편, 민주평통 달라스협의회 오원성 회장은 탈북민 조이 김씨가 가진 미용분야의 꿈을 이룰수 있도록 조력하기 위해 특별장학금을 지원했다. 오원성 회장은 “탈북민을 백방으로 수소문 하던 중 만나게 된 탈북민으로 미용분야에 도전하고 싶다는 말을 들은 후 취업을 돕고자 장학금을 제공하기로 한 것”이라고 말했다.

 Awards Ceremony for the Letter Writing Contest to North Korean Compatriots

“May the Sincerity and Earnestness in the Letters Reach the North” 

The awards ceremony for the “Letter Writing Contest to North Korean Compatriots,” co-hosted by the Dallas Chapter of the National Unification Advisory Council (President Won-Sung Oh) and the North Texas Association of Former North Koreans (President In-Ae Park), was held on Saturday, the 11th.

The grand prize winner, Pastor Myung-Hee Um, who was a teacher in North Korea, conveyed a heartfelt message to her former students, expressing a desire for reunification and to meet soon. Her sincerity earned her high marks from all the judges, including essayist Won-Sung Oh, poet Mi-Hee Kim, poet In-Ae Park, and essayist Kyung-Chul Lee, all prominent Korean writers in North Texas.

Pastor Myung-Hee Um reminisced about the difficult process of escaping North Korea, stating, “I often wanted to die because finding freedom was so hard.” She tearfully added, “Living well in America makes me feel guilty towards the students I left behind in North Korea.”

The first prize was awarded to displaced person Tae-Sung Lim. He shared, “While thinking about my parents’ hometown and writing the letter, I cried endlessly during the multiple revisions.” He expressed deep gratitude to the Dallas Chapter of the National Unification Advisory Council and the North Texas Association of Former North Koreans for organizing the opportunity.

Other awards included the excellence award to defector Mr. Haeng Kim, and encouragement awards to displaced persons Cho Cheong-Song, Chun-Ja Kim, and Jeong-Im Choi. Honorable mentions went to Hye-Jung Yoo, Mi-Young Jang, and North Korean natives Hyun-Sook Jang, Jung-Ae Shim, and Jin-Hee Lim.

Judge In-Ae Park praised the letters, stating that the sincerity and earnestness in them were as precious and moving as any literary work. She added, “Through this letter-writing event, I hope the longing for family and the desire for peaceful reunification will protect the freedom and peace of North Koreans and improve their human rights.” She also mentioned that the judging was conducted with fairness, with all participant names concealed. Unfortunately, some participants from other states, despite receiving high scores, could not attend the awards ceremony and were therefore excluded from the winners.

Won-Sung Oh, president of the Dallas Chapter, stated, “As the human rights situation of North Korean residents continues to deteriorate, the purpose of the letter-writing contest was to comfort the hearts of defectors and displaced persons and to drive changes that will improve human rights and expand freedom in North Korea.” He added, “I was deeply moved and shed many tears while reading the heartfelt letters.”

Young-Ho Kim, a member of the organizing committee, expressed hope that the letters would be delivered to North Korea and help protect the freedom and peace of North Koreans and improve their human rights. He expressed optimism that the interest and support for the unification movement promoted by the Dallas Chapter of the National Unification Advisory Council would be the seeds to safeguard peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Additionally, Won-Sung Oh, president of the Dallas Chapter, provided a special scholarship to support defector Joy Kim’s dream in the beauty industry. He explained, “After tirelessly searching for defectors, I met Joy Kim, who expressed a desire to challenge herself in the beauty industry. To assist her in finding employment, we decided to provide a scholarship.”
